หลักธรรมของพุทธศาสนามหายาน อนัมนิกายถ้ากล่าวกันแล้วมีลักษณะเหมือนของเถรวาท แต่คนละภาษาเท่านั้นเองความหมายมีลักษณะเหมือนกันแทบทุกอย่าง อาจจะมีบ้างที่แตกต่างเพราะเป็นไปตามสภาพของสังคม นั้น ๆ ด้วย เพราะการมีพระพุทธเจ้าองค์เดียวกันจึงทำให้แทบทุกอย่างเหมือนกัน ต่างกันตรงคติที่ยึดถือตามครูบาอาจารย์สืบต่อกันมาเท่านั้นเอง เช่นการมีประวัติของพระพุทธเจ้า การประสูติ ตรัสรู้ การเผยแผ่พระพุทธศาสนา และการปรินิพพานพร้อมมีหลักธรรมเบื้องต้นที่ศึกษาและเข้าใจในเบื้องต้นเหมือนกัน เช่น มีพรหมวิหาร 4, อิทธิบาท 4 เป็นต้น
